Cornerstone University Theatre presents A Little Princess Based on the Story by Francis Hodson Burnett; adapted by John Vreeke. From the same author who penned The Secret Garden, this charming, critically acclaimed family favorite leads you into the magical fantasy world of 10 year old Sara Crewe. Sara is left in a respected New York City boarding school while her British father heads overseas to fight. Filled with wild stories and a playful attitude, the unconventional Sara becomes popular amongst her classmates but quickly comes into conflict with the harsh headmistress, Miss Minchin. Devastating news of her father's death suddenly leaves Sara impoverished, and she's forced into life as a servant. Rejected by her schoolmates, Sara befriends her fellow servants and uses her imagination to maintain hope for the future. This riches-to-rags fable performed long ago on the big screen by Shirley Temple, engages lush, imaginative fantasy sequences, and is known as one of the best family-oriented productions of its time.
Friday, February 03, 2012 - All Dressed Up - 1950s Style

Take a Fashionable Trip Down Memory Lane With1950s Party Fashions on Display at the Grand Rapids Public Museum GRAND RAPIDS, MI (July 26, 2011) - Get a flashback of 1950s social circles when the Grand Rapids Public Museum unveils its newest exhibit , All Dressed Up - 1950s Style, July 30, 2011. Grand Rapids native Doris Cole donated to the Museum's collection 18 mid-century party gowns, along with photos, invitations, yearbooks and mementos from the era.The collection includes stylish "New Look" inspired dresses with pinched waists and full skirts that were worn by Doris and her sister Janice to events at East Grand Rapids High School, Ottawa Hills High School, the University of Michigan and Radcliffe College. The excellent condition of the garments some 60 years later is testimony to the value Doris and her mother, Helen Cole, placed on maintaining the gowns and preserving the memories of the happy celebrations to which they were worn. They also evoke fond memories of shopping trips to former local retail establishments like Jacobson's, Steketee's, Wurzburg's and Herpolsheimer's. The dresses will be on display in the Museum's 2nd floor Bradford gallery through February 2012. The exhibit is free with Museum general admission. To learn more about Doris and her dresses search the Museum's online collections catalog at www.grmuseum.org using the keywords "Doris Cole." The Public Museum is a collector of treasures, a motivator and resource for life-long learning, and a community partner in the pursuit of insight and understanding.
Friday, February 03, 2012 - City of GR 'Quality of LIFE' Game Release

Do you live, work, play, visit, go to school, or commute on, through, or near Michigan Street? To start a community conversation about this regionally important corridor, all you need is a free copy of Quality of LIFE, the new "meeting-in-a-box" game produced by the Grand Rapids Planning Department. The fun yet instructive game is designed to start a meaningful dialogue among neighbors, businesses, special interest groups and the public about their ideas for the future of the Michigan Street corridor. The results of the game will be used to inform a corridor planning process that began last fall and will continue through 2012. Neighborhood organizers and the corridor plan steering committee have already picked up several copies of the game and are planning game nights with family, friends and colleagues, including representatives from the Michigan Street Corridor Association, Grand Rapids Community College instructors and staff, and several others. The game board reflects the four-mile long corridor plan study area, which stretches from the Grand River to the East Beltline and from Leonard to Fulton Streets, with components of the study including St. Mary's Hospital campus. Seven urban neighborhoods with 20,000 residents, numerous local businesses, and the region's major "anchor institutions" are located there. Anchor institutions are significant educational or medical facilities such as Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, St. Mary's Hospital and Spectrum Health.Players will travel up and down the corridor during gameplay, considering issues of housing, transportation, infrastructure, the economy and more as they explore the corridor. The game is free and available now. Players of previous games produced by the Planning Department will know that the games are great to be played with friends, neighbors, and even at work or school. People have been known to host game dinners, take it to block club meetings, church groups, even to local bars (we know of a few along the Michigan Street corridor that would love to host your group!)Inside the game box is the Corridor Map game board, instruction and answer booklets, "Stop!" cards, game pieces, colored markers, sticky dots, and much more. Get together a group of up to eight people, ages 5 and above - or larger groups if you break into teams. Bring your own pen or pencil, and let the game begin! For a copy of Quality of LIFE, contact the Grand Rapids Planning Department at planning@grcity.us or 616-456-3031. Games can be picked up at the Grand Rapids Planning Department, 1120 Monroe NW, and are already going fast. Game results are due back to the department by March 2, 2012.Financial supporters of the corridor planning project include Dyer-Ives Foundation, Frey Foundation, Grand Rapids Community College, The City of Grand Rapids' Community Development and Parking Services Departments, the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority, Grand Rapids Smart Zone Authority, Grand Valley Metropolitan Council, Grand Valley State University, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Michigan State University, the Michigan Street Corridor Association, The Rapid, Spectrum Health, and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. For more information, call 616-456-3031, or visit the Michigan Street Corridor website at: www.michiganstreetcorridor.us

Friday, February 03, 2012 - Essence: The Horses of Deborah Butterfield

Friday, January 27, 2012 - Sunday, April 29, 2012American sculptor Deborah Butterfield is among the most respected and acclaimed artists of her generation. Her horses, like Meijer Gardens' own beloved and iconic Cabin Creek (1999), have been the focus of great interest as much for their creative use of materials as for their craftsmanship. The horse has been the singular focus of her prolific career since the mid 1970s-most frequently focusing on the mare instead of the stallions and warhorses most commonly encountered in the history of art. This exhibition features both the installation of large-scale as well as pedestal -size horses. Each unique example is composed of a wide variety of materials from found and reclaimed metals, to branches and earth. Although each sculpture is inspired by a specific horse Butterfield has known, the works are not portraits in the traditional sense, but representations of the essence of that creature. For Butterfield, it is not merely the physical presence of such noble creatures she hopes to convey but their spirit and energy as well. This exhibition is organized in cooperation with artist and Grounds for Sculpture.

Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) was one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century. A chronicler of contemporary life, most especially the American experience, Rauschenberg's great themes were the city, technology, multiculturalism, and the environment. He worked in a broad range of media as a painter, sculptor, draftsman, photographer, performance artist, choreographer, theater designer, and printmaker. In each of these media, Rauschenberg made innovative use of materials that led to radical new formats–the early "Combines" mixing painting and ordinary objects like a chair, radio, or taxidermied goat; the silkscreen paintings with their transfer of photographic imagery to the canvas; and, the use of electronics and other means to create participatory works of art that prompt audience interaction. The provocative and poetic collisions of images, things, and ideas in Rauschenberg's art are layered in their personal reflections on the social, political, and cultural currents of our time. Three upcoming presentations at the Grand Rapids Art Museum–Robert Rauschenberg in Context, Robert Rauschenberg at Gemini, and Synapsis Shuffle (1999) provide a rich introduction to the defining aspects of Robert Rauschenberg art.

Friday, February 03, 2012 - Small Towns/Big Picture: The Bill Simmons Photographs of Saugatuck & Douglas, 1941-1960

The Saugatuck Center for the Arts (SCA) and the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society will present a collaborative exhibit Small Towns/Big Picture: The Bill Simmons Photographs of Saugatuck & Douglas, 1941-1960 featuring black & white photographs of the lakeshore communities. The exhibition presents 25 photographs snapped by the notable Time-Life reporter and photographer – some of which are being shown for the first time – that best capture the essence of the time period. The community is invited to an opening reception from 6-8:00 pm on January 14, 2012 at the SCA's Bertha Krueger Reid Exhibition Hall (400 Culver St. Saugatuck). Admission to the reception is free and a cash bar will be available. The exhibition will be open 9 am - 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, and during evening events through March 9, 2012. Curated by Ken Carls and Jim Schmiechen, the stunning exhibition showcases people and local life in Saugatuck and Douglas as captured photographer Bill Simmons."When he died in 1966, Simmons left nearly 3,000 photographs documenting life in Saugatuck and Douglas from 1940 to 1961, filed away in envelopes, numbered, named, and placed in two wood boxes, some with date and identifying information," explains Schmiechen. "The collection disappeared until it was acquired by the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society in 1998."SCA Education Manager Miranda Krajniak shares, "The selected photographs evoke a wonderful feeling of nostalgia. Viewers will be taken back in time through the images of people and notable landmarks – many of which are still part of daily life in Saugatuck & Douglas."As pioneered by Life Magazine during the war and post-war decade, Simmons' photos celebrate the optimism of American life, and remind us that Saugatuck and Douglas's past is part of everyone's present. The exhibition is sponsored by Mark Neidlinger and the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs.Reception attendees are encouraged to stay for the screening of everdayPeople, a documentary exploring Saugatuck and Douglas' unique social landscape. The film, which sold out at its September premiere, will be shown at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and available by visiting www.sc4a.org or calling 269.857.2399.

Tiny TreasuresSeptember 8, 2011 through February 19, 2012Small Scale Works from the MMA CollectionCooper GalleryOur experience with a work of art is greatly impacted by its size. Monumental paintings and sculptures tower over and around us, dwarfing human scale and creating vistas that change dramatically with distance. Smaller works require a nearer presence, a closeness that only then reveals their detail and complexity. They are also more easily possessed, as richly ornamented functional objects or as prized possessions within the home. In small scale, artists display amazing skill and craft, creating intricate forms and images with all of the power and drama of their larger counterparts. This exhibition, the first in a series of exhibitions offered in celebration of our 100th Year, assembles some of the best tiny treasures from the MMA collections, including prints, paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects. Highlighting the craft and decorative arts are a selection of boxes from the Mabel Nano Keating Collection, a bequest of over 250 miniature boxes and card cases collected from around the world in the first half of the 20th century. Supplementing these portable works of art are intricate engravings by artists such as Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt, paintings by John Singer Sargent and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a collection of paintings on ivory by Isabelle M. Blood, and a sampling of works in bronze, glass, and silver.RELATED PROGRAMOpen ToursThursdays, November 3 & 10, 1:00-3:00 pmSundays, November 6 & 13, 1:00-2:00 pmDrop in to tour Tiny Treasures with a Museum docent.
Friday, February 03, 2012 - Wish You Were Here: Selections from the Mike Van Ark Postcard Collection

American postcards were created as an easier way to send quick notes and were printed only by the U.S. Postal Service, until May, 1898. The first postcards were called "private mailing cards" and cost one penny to send. The sender's message was written over the image itself because writing was not permitted by law on the address side. The first souvenir postcard was created in 1893 to advertise the World's Fair in Chicago.
