March 09th, 2010 - America and the Cold War

January 22 - June 13, 2010World War II was the most devastating conflict in history with much of Europe and Asia left in ruins at war's end. Yet, there was no peace. The superpowers of the United States and Soviet Union and their ideologies of democracy versus tyranny competed for prominence on the world stage in a cold war. For over 40 years these nuclear superpowers maintained a standoff and avoided a hot war that could have potentially destroyed the planet.Open daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. (Closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day).Admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for senior citizens and military service members, $5.00 for college students with ID, $3.00 for youth ages 6-18, and free for children under the age of 5. Free parking is available.

Experience a praying mantis, a stick insect, a caterpillar, a locust and more; all magnified to be larger than life! The exhibit skews scale and proportion to create an environment that "shrinks" the visitor to a size smaller than the insects under investigation, in a humorous role reversal. Visitors can enter the Bug House with its dirt walls and framed portraits of family members, check out the giant aerosol can of people repellant, part the grass to more closely explore the praying mantis, and enter the fighting atlas beetles' vignette from below via worm hole.Dig deeper into bug life and lore in regularly scheduled sessions in the Bug Lab, exploring such subjects as bug life cycles, anatomy & adaptations, and bug "jobs."Big Bug Nights Enjoy special evening packages March 1-5, April 1-9 and May 10-14. 5-9 pm. Package includes Museum admission, special exhibit admission, a planetarium show, unlimited carousel rides and dinner for just $10 per person. (Members pay just $5.)
March 09th, 2010 - Butterflies are Blooming

Butterflies Are Blooming is Meijer Gardens' most popular annual exhibition and the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibit in the nation. March 1-April 30, visitors can escape the Michigan winter and mingle with more than 6,000 tropical butterflies flying free in the 15,000-square-foot Lena Meijer Conservatory. The exhibition boasts more than 40 different species from the Far East, Africa and Central America. Each week hundreds of chrysalises arrive at Meijer Gardens and are painstakingly sorted, inspected, labeled and pinned in our sealed Butterfly Bungalow. The chrysalises are then placed in a special emergence area of the Bungalow where visitors can witness through a window their magical transformation into butterflies! Long-time favorites such as the Blue Morpho, with its large metallic blue wings and the Clearwing, with its see-through wings will return. Others such as the Tree Nymph, Black Swordtail, Leopard Lacewing and the Atlas Moth, with its impressive six-to-twelve-inch wingspan are also expected to make appearances.Once ready to be released into the Conservatory, the butterflies are placed on plants where they acclimate to the environment and gain strength before taking to the air. It's a wonderful place for photos and just one of the opportunities for visitors to observe the butterflies up-close and personal. Throughout the tropical environment, butterflies can be viewed drinking nectar from the flowering plants and feeding stations, lighting on the odd nose or shoulder, and congregating along the stream beds, as well as in flight all around.During the exhibition, the Lena Meijer Children's Garden offers special activities. Additionally, interactive displays are featured throughout.Exhibit hours: Monday, Wednesday-Sunday, 9 am-5 pm; Tuesday, 9 am-9 pm

March 09th, 2010 - Calder Jewelry

Grand Rapids Art MuseumJanuary 29 - April 18, 2010Made possible byKate and Richard Wolters FoundationWarner, Norcross & Judd LLPDirk and Victoria HoffiusSteven and Susan HoffiusAlexander Calder (1898-1976) was a sculptor, painter, printmaker, designer, and performance artist. The first gift that he gave his future wife Louisa James was a bracelet he made of hammered brass. In 1930 she wrote to her mother, "Sandy appreciates and enjoys the things in life that most people haven't the sense to notice... He has tremendous originality, imagination, and humor, which ...make life colorful and worthwhile." In that year Calder gave Louisa an engagement ring he made in gold.Calder designed and produced more than 1800 works of jewelry, including hundreds of gifts for Louisa. He made jewelry for family members and friends, such as Peggy Guggenheim and Georgia O'Keeffe, and exhibited his jewelry in gallery exhibitions, avoiding precious materials to keep the works affordable. He consciously referenced primitive art and Surrealism in many of the designs that often appear to be small studies for sculpture or drawings in wire.Calder Jewelry commences the Centennial Year of the Grand Rapids Art Museum (1910-2010), recalling Calder's historic association with the Museum during the 1969 installation of La Grande Vitesse. A combination of sculpture, craft, and design, the 100 necklaces, rings, bracelets, and brooches created from the 1930s through the 1960s introduce a new dimension of Alexander Calder's artistic achievement. These works embody the same humor and invention as his mobiles that came to life as they moved. The exhibition is co-organized by the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida, and the Calder Foundation, New York. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is the final venue for this exhibition, which has been presented at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and San Diego Museum of Art, California.

March 09th, 2010 - Creating a Legacy: The Women of Grand Rapids

This exhibit challenges that myth that women had little impact on public life in the city. This exhibit is not intended to showcase the most influential or outstanding women in Grand Rapids history, rather these individuals represent many time periods and areas of endeavor in which women have helped give our community its distinctive way of life. Meet Dr. Pearl Kendrik and Grace Eldering who created headlines across the nation when they developed the vaccine against whooping cough. Read about Elizabeth Eaglesfield, the first women to practice law in Grand Rapids. (She later obtained a captain’s license and ran a Great Lakes shipping company with her son!) Consider the accomplishments of Evangeline Lamberts, the first woman elected to the Grand Rapids City Commission in 1961. These and many others created a living legacy for the City of Grand Rapids. Free and open to the public.

March 09th, 2010 - Spirit and Form: Michele Oka Doner and the Natural World

January 29 - May 9, 2010American artist Michele Oka Doner is widely celebrated for her sculpture, installations and public art projects, and is similarly acclaimed for her prints, jewelry and functional objects. Among the most versatile artists working today, the inspiration she draws from nature is the defining factor and unifying force across her repertoire in both formal and spiritual terms. This exhibition, Oka Doner's largest to date, examines the breadth of her endeavors from recent figurative projects in bronze and on paper to iconic functional objects in bronze and silver. Of special note will be her site specific installation of more than 1,500 recently completed ceramic soul catchers completed during her residency at the famed Nymphenburg porcelain studios in Munich, Germany. This exhibition is timed to coincide with the completion of Beneath the Leafy Crown, the expansive 1,200 square foot bronze and terrazzo floor commissioned by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

March 09th, 2010 - Wine School with Mike Dombrowski

People have been asking for a wine class and starting next month we’re offering one. We’ll do one class a month on the second Tuesday at 7pm for ninety minutes. The wines will be examples of the meeting’s topic of discussion. There will be handouts and maps and all the wines will be tasted blind. You will keep a notebook of the wines from that night as well as all the wines in your personal experiences. The goal of these courses is to advance your wine knowledge from that of consumer to that of connoisseur. To provide a step from enjoying wine to thinking about wine, and quite possibly, beginning to understand wine. This is a purely educational experience. I want to be clear also as to what it is not. This is not a social, not a chance to meet new people, not a chance to sample wines for purchase, and not a chance to catch a buzz. It is a class similar to what you had in college. Meaning, yes there will be quizzes. Here’s the schedule:February 9th- Professional Tasting and Analysis, Making Sense of SensesMarch 9th- The Notion of Terrior, An Exploration into the Essence of Vineyard PlaceApril 13th- Aging Wine, What Happens and Will She Like It?May 11th- Grower Production Versus Big Boys, Do Winemakers, or Winegrowers, create the ‘best’ wines? Each tasting is $35 and will require a credit card reservation. All four classes combined are $125. The class will be limited to 12 students, with a waiting list. Please call Corez at 855-2310 or email Mike@corezwinebar.com to reserve.

March 09th, 2010 - Woodcuts in Modern China, 1937-2008

Towards a Universal Pictoral LanguageJanuary 23 - April 18, 2010Chinese artists adapted the Western-style woodcut to create a pictorial language that resonated with the illiterate masses. They also created the beginnings of communist art in China and, in the most general sense, laid the foundation of modern Chinese art. The exhibition is the first organized in the U.S. to present a comprehensive overview of the beginnings and development of this important art form. This exhibition features 65 Chinese woodblock prints. Thirty pieces are drawn from the collection of the Picker Art Gallery's rare collection of modern Chinese woodcuts from the 1930s and 1940s. In addition, over 30 woodblock prints by eleven contemporary Chinese artists (1950s-today) are included. This exhibition is organized by the Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University, and was made possible by a generous gift by Robert H.G. Ho. Its showing in Kalamazoo is supported by the Joy Light East Asian Art Acquisition and Exhibition Fund.

January 22 - June 13, 2010World War II was the most devastating conflict in history with much of Europe and Asia left in ruins at war's end. Yet, there was no peace. For over 40 years these nuclear superpowers maintained a standoff and avoided a hot war that could have potentially destroyed the planet.Open daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

March 10th, 2010 - Creating a Legacy: The Women of Grand Rapids

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's lavish version of the biblical parable of Joseph will burst on the Civic stage with a large cast. The biblical parable of Joseph and his magnificent coat of many colors is set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country and calypso to pop and rock n' roll. Follow Joseph from the favor of his Father's eye through servitude in Egypt and the ultimate showdown with the brothers who sold him out of jealousy and which he forgives in a heartfelt reconciliation. Through the clever artistry of Rice and Webber, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.Tickets: $16-$30

Based heavily on Charles Schulz's childhood experiences with sandlot baseball, the stories of the Peanuts baseball team are in turn whimsical, thoughtful, hilarious, and full of pathos.March 1 - May 1, 2010General admission is free

March 10th, 2010 - Selections from The North American Indian

November 5, 2009 – January 10 & January 14 – April 4, 2010	In 1907, photographer Edward Curtis began work on a series of books and portfolios titled The North American Indian. The intent of the project was to document, both in writing and photography, the lives and cultures of the tribes living in the United States. The final project was comprised of 20 leather bound books, each with an accompanying photographic portfolio, for a total of 2,228 illustrations. The North American Indian was available as a subscription, but due to the price, only about 220 were ever produced. The Hackley Public Library opened a subscription in 1908 and completed its set in 1930. In 1976 the complete set was transferred to the Muskegon Museum of Art as a permanent loan. Two exhibitions will display highlights from this extensive collection.

March 10th, 2010 - Spirit and Form: Michele Oka Doner and the Natural World
