Looking for a weekend getaway involving brewing your own batch of beer? Sherwood Forest is offering a unique package that includes a 2-night stay plus access to Saugatuck Brewing Company's brew-on-site facilities. SBC will provide the recipes and the ingredients, the professional brewing equipment, and the expertise to take you through the brewing process. You'll brew at least 11 gallons of beer (sixty 22-oz. bottles). If 11 gallons of beer is more than you need, bring a friend or two and split the batch. It takes 3-4 hours to brew your batch and you return in 2weeks to bottle and sample your beer, which takes about 2 hours. Or you can have them bottle it and pick it up (an extra $20). The cost runs from $635-$715, depending on the time of year and the room. For more info or to book this package, give us a call at 800-838-1246.

Sunday, May 26, 2013 - Form & Function - Ethnographic Art from Africa, Asia and the Middle East

Form and Function explores the idea that the everyday can be beautiful. Through a carefully curated selection of objects culled from the collection of local resident David Baas, visitors are exposed to an array of beautifully made pieces intended to perform everyday functions such as storage, cooking, protection from the cold, and the like. Many of the pieces exhibit careful repairs, which illustrate the value that is placed on them by their makers and users. A lifetime collector, David's extensive travels in India, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Africa, and Southeast Asia have allowed him to amass a wide ranging and culturally diverse collection consisting of more than 300 objects, a sample of which is represented here. The exhibited collection includes pieces made of ceramic, wooden, textile, metal and basketry that date from the 19th and early 20th centuries.Baas received a Bachelor's degree in English from Hope College and a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics from Arizona State University, Tempe. He became a teacher of English as a second language in Japan and Saudi Arabia. During his teaching sojourns and travels, Baas became intimately aware of the art and artifacts of the cultures in which he was living, and his appetite for collecting began. Patience, restraint and a discerning eye have produced a collection of objects that are superior to selections offered by street vendors or at tourist market stalls. In the exhibit, this discernment is evident in that a large part of the experience for the visitor is seeing the mute signs of use that the pieces display. The wear and repairs to the objects as they were used in daily life have created a beautiful patina, which has been carefully preserved.November 13, 2012-August 31, 2013

Chinese artist Zhang Huan is among the most prodigious and insightful artists working today. As a sculptor, painter, photographer, performance and installation artist, his impact in broadening the global dimensions of contemporary art has been immense. Themes of physical endurance and spiritual tranquility, Chinese history and heritage, and an interest in and reverence for Buddhism inform his repertoire. This exhibition explores the world of Zhang Huan both thematically and artistically. While works of sculpture are central to this presentation, including his iconic copper and steel Long Island Buddha, several of the artist's paintings and photographs will also be featured. Although forms and materials may vary, Zhang Huan's commitment to exploring the dimensions of the human condition and expanding the figurative tradition is unfailingly discerning.

Using her innate flair for abstract design, Susana Allen Hunter (1912–2005) created hundreds of colorful improvisational quilts throughout her lifetime. From the 1930s to the 1970s she lived in Wilcox County, Alabama, and created brightly patterned quilts that reflected her life in that rural community as well as her experiences as an African-American woman. Hunter turned the fabric of everyday life into eye-catching quilts with an abstract, asymmetrical and often modern aesthetic.

Inspired by Detroit's spirit of technological innovation, Heather McGill's current series of highly patterned wall sculptures and drawings applies the materials of industry to modern art.One of the dynamic aspects of her work is her use of interference paints, which create color-shifting illusions. The paint's effect is activated when the viewer moves to view the object at an oblique angle, suggesting a shift in our perceptual reality.Heather McGill is Head of the Sculpture Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Monday, May 27, 2013 - Junior Regional Art Competition

This spring, LowellArts! focuses on the region's creative youth artists with the second annual Junior Regional (Art) Competition. On display at King Gallery, 149 S. Hudson, Lowell, from April 30 through May 30, the exhibition culminates with a Closing Reception/Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 30, from 5-6:30pm. The reception is open to the public. This exhibit features work from artists ages 13-18 living in Kent, Barry, Ionia and Montcalm Counties. Modeled after LowellArts! annual West Michigan Regional (Art) Competition, the "junior version" differs in two significant ways: there are no entry fees and no monetary prizes. Instead, award winners will receive prizes and awards contributed by regional and national art organizations, including art supplies, gift certificates, and vouchers for art classes and theatre tickets. The competition was designed to encourage entries from young people serious about fine art and who have already shown a strong interest in developing their skills. It is a great opportunity for students building their portfolios as well. Sponsors are Daniel Smith, Inc., Dick Blick Art Materials, Forest Hills Fine Arts Center, Frames Unlimited, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University and Service Reproductions. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10am -6pm/ Saturday 1-4pm. For more information, contact LowellArts! at (616) 897-8545, e-mail info@lowellartsmi.org or visit www.lowellartsmi.org.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. February 12, 2013 – Beginning April 3, Pine Rest will display a selection of Ben Neumann's photography. The exhibit will be located in the Postma Center Leep Art Gallery at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, 300 68th Street, Grand Rapids. Ben Neumann describes photography as his escape, his challenge, his passion. Neumann's show entitled "The American Landscape" exhibits grand landscapes captured through using both creative vision and technical savvy. Being inspired by the National Parks and great photographers of the world, Neumann expands his imagination with each photograph he takes. Pleasantly surprised by nature's beauty and spontaneity, Neumann's photography first began to evolve in California. Since then, his creative and artistic photographs have been licensed to corporate companies such as Apple Inc., Harpo Productions and Wolverine Boot Products. The PNC Bank corporate gallery in Pittsburgh, Pa., also has a display of his work. The exhibit at Pine Rest will run April 3 until July 2, 2013. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additional times are available by appointment. There is no admission fee. For more information, please call 616/222-4530.

Tuesday, May 28, 2013 - Form & Function - Ethnographic Art from Africa, Asia and the Middle East
