July 04th, 2009 - 'Cry Out' - Emily Beynon Exhibition at Pine Rest Postma Center

Titled “Cry Out,” the show represents the deep exploration of the artist finding her voice in watercolor. The paintings she has chosen to share at Pine Rest each encompass a testimony to the omnipresence of the Lord. Emily Beynon was a member of the Grand Rapids Watercolor Society and now she is on the Advisory Board of City ArtWorks, a non-profit art education organization in Houston. Beynon graduated from Albion College in Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Studio Art. While enrolled in post graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University in the 1970’s, she studied watercolor and discovered her artistic connection with God. In the late 1980's Emily earned her Masters in Social Work degree from The University of Houston. Through her work as a clinical social worker she was privileged to be present with people in their suffering, in their struggling, in their hope and in their healing. Out of this profession Emily was given the sight to express the emotional, physical and spiritual depths of the human experience through her paintings.

June 2 - August 30, 2009In 1969 the monumental sculpture La Grande Vitesse (The Great Swiftness or Grand Rapids) was installed on Vandenberg Plaza in Grand Rapids. One of Calder's most important public sculptures, it was the first public work to receive funding from the new National Endowment for the Arts, founded in 1965. The balance of funding was provided by Peter M. Wege, then art museum board president, who led the Calder campaign, and museum trustees Miner S. and Mary Ann Keeler. Astral Bodies, a gouache by Calder now in the museum collection, was auctioned in support of the funding campaign. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this great sculpture at the center of the downtown, the art museum presents works by Calder in the collection and promised gifts to the collection, including prints, gouache paintings, mobiles, and stabiles. A Calder Celebration Symposium will be held at the art museum with Alexander Rower, Director of the Calder Foundation and grandson of Alexander Calder, as guest speaker.

Mabel H. Perkins (1880-1974) was an international art collector whose generosity was crucial in building the collection of the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Between 1947 and 1973 she gave the Museum nearly 300 prints, including etchings, engravings, woodcuts, and lithographs by a range of artists. Her mother Mrs. Cyrus E. Perkins was co-founder and first president of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and was an important influence on Mabel Perkins’ love of art and her desire to share her interest with the public.A discerning and avid collector, Mabel Perkins sought out prints by master printmakers such as Albrecht Dürer, Francisco Goya, Hendrik Goltzius, Jacques Callot, Paul Gauguin, Edvard Munch, Jean-François Millet, Mary Cassatt, and James McNeill Whistler. She was also forward thinking in her purchases, collecting works by contemporary artists Pablo Picasso and Jasper Johns. This exhibition, drawn entirely from the Mabel H. Perkins Collection, includes sixty important works dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century chosen for their outstanding quality. The exhibition is made possible by Wege Foundation.

July 04th, 2009 - GRAM Presents Father and Son: Eliel and Eero Saarinen at Cranbrook

Eliel Saarinen (1873–1950) was born and educated in Helsinki, Finland, where he established an international reputation as an architect and designer, combining the traditions of Finnish wooden architecture with Jugendstil. In 1923, he moved to the United States with his wife Louise Gesellius, a sculptor, and their two children, Pipsan and Eero. They settled in Chicago where Eliel worked on plans for the design of the Chicago lakefront and served as visiting professor at the University of Michigan. In 1925 George Booth asked him to design the campus at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where Saarinen became President in 1932. Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) grew up at Cranbrook and collaborated with his father on design and architecture projects. He became one of the most important American architects of mid-century International style, designing TWA and Dulles airports, corporate headquarters, and a classic group of modern furniture. On exclusive loan from the collection of Cranbrook Art Museum, furniture and drawings by father and son represent the close creative relationship between Eliel and Eero Saarinen and the extraordinary talent of both men, leaders in a brilliant era of modern international design. In conjunction with the exhibition, Greg Wittkopp, Director of Cranbrook Art Museum will present a lecture, Lessons of the Father: Eliel and Eero Saarinen, on Friday, September 11 at 7:00pm.

“In Plane View,” an exhibition of 56 large-format photographs by Carolyn Russo, showcases the aesthetic quality of some of the National Air and Space Museum’s iconic aircraft. With up-close facets, sculptural forms and life-like elements, “In Plane View” directs viewers’ attention to the often-overlooked simple elegance of aircraft design.

The word musing is based on the noun muse, meaning the goddess of art in Greek mythology, one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. The Muses inspire and preside over the creative arts. On display beginning June 19, 2009 at the Gerald R. Ford Museum is a collection of art quilts created by members of the Studio Art Quilts Association or "SAQA." Included are 29 art quilts from across the United States. The SAQA is a non profit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education , exhibitions, professional development and documentation. The organization was founded in 1989 by a group of fifty artists and now has over two thousand members.Sandra Sider, a contemporary quilt artist, critic and independent curator was the sole juror for Musings. In the past, Ms. Sider was the sole juror for numerous other SAQA quilt shows. She teaches art history and is a regular contributor to Fiberarts Magazine and other trade journals.

July 04th, 2009 - The Independence Day Water Balloon Fight

To celebrate the 4th of July, there will be a massive water balloon fight Revolutionary War style involving 60,000+ water balloons with two teams battling it out. The World Record stands at 2,900 people and 50,000 balloons in one massive battle, we have to beat it!Two teams will battle it out for around 20 minutes, the Redcoats (Red Team) and the Americans (Blue Team). You don't need to dress like its colonial era (Though it's encouraged!) but at least a Blue or Red shirt would be great. I'll probably be selling some cool looking t-shirts for the event if you need one (or if you need a dry shirt after the event!)General Guidelines:If you get hit, act like it was by a huge cannon and die epically for at least 10 seconds before coming back to life and getting back in the gameKeep some distance (at least 15 feet) between teamsNo Throwing Water Balloons at Buildings/Cars or people just passing by!Don't whip a balloon at anyone's face. If it's throw in the air and lands on someone's head that's different, but not thrown directly into another's face.No Water GunsEnding: After 20 or so minutes the Americans will launch one last big attack to end it, at which point the National Anthem will play and we'll all triumphantly sing it together. Immediately afterward if you can help pick up the pieces of water balloons around to keep the park clean that's extremely important so please help out!Volunteers! I need as much help as possible with this event, people who can help create balloons please show up 1-3 hours early and hang out with me and we're going to need lots of help. Please message me saying you can, I'd really appreciate it.This event is going to be so much fun I can't wait. We need help spreading the word so please take a few minutes and invite some friends on facebook; it's a free event so please lend a hand.On July 4th there's going to be a moment in time when thousands and thousands of water balloons are going to be in the sky of Downtown Grand Rapids at the same time... awesome.
