Museums Free 4 All
On Sunday, April 21, 2013, the four major downtown museums will open their doors free of admission. The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum will join together once again to welcome the region's residents for free general admission at each institution from noon to 5pm.
This day-long event is generously sponsored by Amway. Amway was also a presenting sponsor during last year's Museums Free 4 All collaboration, and this year is placing volunteers at each of the four Museums downtown, and also providing fun, family-friendly activities at the Amway tent located outdoors on GRAM's Wege Plaza.
"Amway is proud to sponsor Museums Free 4 All, a West Michigan tradition that continues to enrich the lives of local residents," said David Madiol, West Michigan Community Relations Manager at Amway. "The expense of buying tickets to a museum, let alone to four museums, can strain a family budget. That's why on April 21, thanks to the support from Amway, anyone will be able visit all four downtown Grand Rapids museums completely free of charge." Madiol added, "All of us at Amway are looking forward to enjoying this day together with our West Michigan neighbors."
This year, guests can receive a "passport" at any of the four museums downtown or at the Amway tent. Each museum will have a stamp or sticker to mark off a visit to their corresponding institution. Guests who have certain locations stamped (or all locations stamped) can show their passport to receive prizes in the Amway tent. Prizes will vary based on the number of stickers collected throughout the day.
Amway will be offering a variety of other fun, family-friendly activities throughout the day, including Zumba dance breaks and more."Museums Free 4 All is another great reason to go out and explore the many cultural experiences Grand Rapids museums offer," said Natalie Thomas, Communications Coordinator at GRAM. "Whether guests choose to view the Graphic Design: Now in Production exhibition, The Jansma Print Collection, or look into the diverse works of art in GRAM's permanent collection, there is something for everyone at GRAM and the three other participating institutions downtown."
Free trolleys will be running from 12pm-6pm that Sunday, with a trolley stop near each Museum location. This allows for easy access to each of the Museums throughout the day.
"This event provides a wonderful opportunity for families to come downtown and explore what Grand Rapids has to offer," said Adrienne Brown, Public Relations & Events Manager at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum. "It's a great way to get even the youngest interested in the cultural and artistic organizations of our city."
This collaboration has numerous benefits for all who participate, enhancing the downtown experience and helping to draw in other visitors who may not have ventured downtown before. This also helps expose new visitors to the many other offerings in downtown Grand Rapids- including retail stores, restaurants, and more-and allows them to become familiar with parking options, encouraging return visits to the city.
Kate Moore, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, said, "The Grand Rapids Public Museum is once again grateful to Amway for their sponsorship of this remarkable community program, making it possible for the museums in Grand Rapids to open their doors free of charge on this special day. This unique partnership and new passport program we have created between the four museums is one we hope we can continue."
The four cultural institutions have separately offered times of free or reduced admission for special events, but coordinating together on this single day will draw visitors into the city center to enjoy the museums overall.
