Rock the Rapids 2013
Rock the Rapids, the not-for-profit, week- long music festival, announced today that it would be returning to Fifth Third Ballpark for the 2013 summer season. A three-day concert event will be held from August 20 through August 22 as a fundraiser for the benefit of Rock the Rapids. Festival founder Dennis Baxter cited that the festival board of directors and promoters wanted to take some time and reexamine the downtown business model from both an economic standpoint and also a location standpoint. "We recognize that our present location downtown may not be available to us on a long-term basis and so we needed to take a step back and research new opportunities to continue as a growing event downtown" said Baxter. Artists for this year's event have not yet been released but Baxter stated he expects to be in position to name artists soon.
Baxter also stated that, "Rock the Rapids was launched at Fifth Third Ballpark in 2009 and it got the festival started on a very positive note. We wanted to keep the music festival alive while we take the time necessary to explore our options downtown and the ballpark is absolutely the best place for us to put on a quality event while we work on creating a bigger and better musical festival for the future. I believe that we have demonstrated the community's desire for an outdoor music festival and we certainly have laid a solid foundation from which to build upon."
Board member Bill Rock noted that, "We have created a lot of brand recognition; we have a great working relationship with the city; we have a dedicated core of volunteers and we have a solid sponsorship base from which to build from. These assets along with the experience gained over the last couple of years will serve us well as we move forward in making Rock the Rapids the preeminent music festival in the state of Michigan." Some of the additional goals for the festival are to seek additional members to its current board of directors and to secure a new equity base from which to operate. Plans for additional attractions to be added to the festival are also under consideration. "We certainly have a lot of work to do over the next year but we are also very committed to having a fantastic three-day event this summer that I'm sure everyone will be excited about," said Rock.
Rock the Rapids has operated in downtown Grand Rapids for the last two years after two years of performances at Fifth Third Ballpark. The week-long music festival has grown each year, with the 2012 festival drawing nearly 40,000 fans to downtown Grand Rapids. The festival lineup has featured such artists as Jason Aldean, Alice Cooper, Ludacris, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert and the Uproar Tour featuring Godsmack and Staind. Said Baxter, "We have had good success at the ballpark in our early years and it is a quality venue to host an outdoor concert. We look forward to working with the Whitecaps management team
in producing an event this summer that maintains the standards established by the previous Rock the Rapids events."
