GRAM Tree Lighting Ceremony & Opening of Rosa Parks Circle Ice Skating

A special evening in downtown Grand Rapids is scheduled for November 30, 2012, where several businesses and organizations collaborate to offer an expanded holiday experience in the city. A variety of popular holiday events-the GRAM Tree Lighting, the opening of Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink, and free horse-drawn carriage rides-are celebrated together to provide the community with an evening filled with diverse entertainment options.

At 5:30pm the ceremony begins, watch as the majestic Holiday Tree on the Grand Rapids Art Museum Wege Plaza is lit for the holiday season. Join Art Museum Board President Mitchell Watt as he welcomes everyone and introduces the participants. Mayor George Heartwell will welcome everyone downtown to enjoy holidays in the city, and will then announce the official opening of GR Parks and Recreation's Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink, along with a special season-opening skating performance by figure skater Kimberly Scott. Then, GRAM Director and CEO Dana Friis-Hansen will pull theswitch to illuminate the tree! The ceremony will conclude at 5:45pm.

After the ceremony, downtown visitors can head into the Art Museum to enjoy Friday Nights at GRAM (galleries open until 9:00 pm), join in the fun on the newly-opened ice rink, or enjoyfree horse-drawn carriage rides, provided by the Downtown Alliance. Rides are available from 6:00-8:00pm. Look for the pick-up stations on Louis Street, alongside the Art Museum. Also, watch for festive window displays, enticingrestaurant options, and great gift ideas as part of the "Get Your Joy On" merchant holiday celebration as you stroll along the downtown sidewalks.

At 7:00pm, as part of GRAM'sFriday Night Conversations, guests can experience a "magical" performance inside the Museum, inspired byReal/Surreal-an exhibition from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
