'The Giving Tree' Installation at John Ball Zoo
Erica Yob's ArtPrize entry, THE GIVING TREE, has been donated to John Ball Zoo and will be installed tomorrow.
The 5,000+ pound bench will be moved from in front of Bull's Head Tavern to the Idema Forest Realm at John Ball Zoo.
Erica has been a supporter of the community as a whole, John Ball Zoo, and conservation for many years. The Zoo welcomes the piece of art because of the shared support for the message the piece conveys:
Shel Silverstein's story, 'The Giving Tree,' was the inspiration for this art piece. The message engraved on the seat back serves as a tribute to the generosity of the many families who have given so much to make this community a wonderful place to live and visit. This bench is also a testament to Grand Rapids' past as a logging center and furniture capital of the world in the 1900's. The faded water on the reverse side represents the tree flowing down the Grand River approximately 100 years ago. The wood itself, a white pine and our state tree, displays the beauty that Michigan has to offer from it's wooded trails to the shoreline
Yob said that one of the joys of creating this piece was that it allowed her to get outside. Yob, who has kids of her own, enjoys visits to the zoo and looks forward to seeing her piece being used by families that visit the zoo each year.
