Circle Theatre 2012 Season

Starting off the season in May of 2013 is the musical comedy THE WEDDING SINGER, running May 9 through 25. This pop/rock musical with book by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy and music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin is based on the New Line Cinema film of the same name, written by Tim Herlihy. The show takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. It's 1985 and rock star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affections. As luck would have it, Julia is about to get married to a Wall Street shark and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

The second play of the season is the Frederick Knott thriller, WAIT UNTIL DARK. This suspenseful play, running June 6 through 22, follows the story of a sinister con man and two ex-convicts that have traced the location of a mysterious doll to the apartment of Sam and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border, not knowing that inside were several grams of heroin. When the woman is murdered, the con man and his ex-convicts, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when the con man kills his associates, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues between the two. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving both of them to maneuver in the dark until the game ends.

Taking the stage in July of 2013 is THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: CAPS & GOWNS, the sequel to the smash Off-Broadway hit musical comedy The Marvelous Wonderettes. This critically acclaimed hit takes us back to 1958, where it's time for The Marvelous Wonderettes to graduate. Join Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy as they sing about their final year in high school, celebrate with their fellow classmates and teachers, and prepare for their next step toward a bright future. Act Two zooms ahead to 1968, where the girls perform as bride and bridesmaids to celebrate Missy's marriage to Mr. Lee! Featuring all-time favorite songs like "Rock Around the Clock," "At the Hop," "Dancing in the Street," "River Deep, Mountain High," and 25 more hits, The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns will have your audience cheering for more! This delightful musical conceived by Roger Bean, runs July 11 through 27.

The fourth play of the season is the classic farce BOEING-BOEING by Marc Camoletti. This newly revised 1960's comedy adapted by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans will run August 9 through 24 and features self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard, who has French, German and American fiancees, each beautiful airline hostesses with frequent "layovers". He keeps "one up, one down and one pending" until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris and Bernard's apartment at the same time. The New York Times says "This latest edition of a play named for an aircraft soars right out of its time zone and into some unpolluted stratosphere of classic physical comedy. Propelled by the same gusty spirit that animated Commedia dell'Arte and the silent films of Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd, {this} may be earthy, but it's seldom earthbound." Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play!

The fifth and final production of the 2013 Circle season will be SWEENEY TODD. This iconic musical will run September 5 through 21. The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. Winner of the 1979 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book of A Musical, and Best Original Score!
