Grand Rapids, MI – Grand River Cigar is a premier-class retail shop and lounge-the first in West Michigan-and promises to be a favorite hangout at 131 South Division. The community is invited to an open house and ribbon cutting Wednesday, Nov. 30, with City Commission President Dave Shaffer officiating. Light refreshments will be served, as well as a chance to win a box of Jenuwine cigars.
Owners Robin and Tina Day and Charlie J. Rossi have just put the finishing touches on their new venue-one that evokes nostalgia with the refurbished wood floors, high ceilings, and antique cases originally made in Grand Rapids that have been given a new life. The business owners have obtained a self-contained humidor from a company in Florida that is not only their largest built (16 feet), but also their first humidor ever created with reverse osmosis which protects the cigars' flavor by removing all impurities from the water. The humidor will house 100 types of cigars from 20 different brands, including Arturo Fuente, Hemingway, and Monte Cristo's White and Black Labels, and Opus X. Grand River Cigar has access to a total of 800 types of cigars, and can receive any cigar within five days. The lounge which seats 17 people in luxurious fine-leather furniture will be open shortly, once the HVAC is installed.
Grand River Cigar is already proving to fill a niche in Grand Rapids. Although not open yet, many interested visitors have included members of the Grand Rapids Cigar Society, West Michigan Cigar Society, and the Brotherhood of the Leaf. Already leased are 7 of 24 special wooden lockers that allow patrons to keep their private stock in a convenient, self-contained unit that is humidity-controlled. Various seating arrangements and tables allow customers to host business meetings during the day, as well. The owners will be applying for a liquor license within a year. A coffee bar and free wi-fi are available amenities, and parking lot directly behind the building is available after 5 p.m. Although there are set hours, the lounge will stay open as long as the clientele desires.
Robin Day has had an extensive career in retail business development, with 20 years in upper- management positions for Lowe's Home Improvement, Michaels Arts & Crafts and Jo-Ann Stores. Charlie Rossi has worked at Noto's, Kelly's Harley Davidson, and Wild Boar, and then Lowe's to work with Robin. Passionate about cigars, when the smoking ban legislation hit in 2010, Robin and Charlie jumped at the chance to become entrepreneurs. After lots of research and becoming incorporated, they have invested over $100,000 to provide a top-notch venue.
